Vidalia Care Guide

Handle With Care

Vidalia onions carry extra water—that’s the sweet, mild magic. It also means they bruise easier and don’t keep as long as storage onions. Here’s how growers, retailers, and home cooks can keep that sweetness at its best.

Why extra care?

The Sweetness Comes with a Secret

Vidalias’ higher water content delivers that mild, juicy flavor you love—while shortening shelf life and increasing the chance of bruising. A little care goes a long way to protect their taste and texture.

Quick facts

  • Vidalias have high water content → sweeter flavor
  • Vidalias are more delicate → store & handle gently

Storing fresh sweet onions

Do’s and Don’ts

Refrigerate for long-lasting sweetness.

Wrap each bulb in paper towels to absorb moisture, then place in the crisper with vents closed. Many will keep for months.

Try the pantyhose trick.

Slip onions into the legs of clean, sheer pantyhose, tying a knot between each. Hang in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area; cut above the knot to use one.

Don’t store with potatoes.

Potatoes release gases that speed onion spoilage. Keep them separate.

Ways to Preserve Vidalias for Cooking

Dried

Chop evenly, spread on a baking sheet, and use the oven’s lowest setting. Remove when fully dry (not brown). Store at room temperature in airtight containers.

Chopped & Frozen

Chop evenly, spread on a cookie sheet, freeze, then transfer to freezer-safe bags/containers for easy grab-and-go cooking.

Frozen Whole

Peel, wash, and core onions. Freeze whole in freezer-safe containers or bags for future use.
